Q: How long do you need to keep a hard drive for investigations purposes?
Q: If an ex-employee does not want to give us his passwords, how long does it take to recover them?
Q: What are the price ranges for recovering data?
Data recovery pricing will depend on the size and type of media along with is it a physical failure or
a logical failure that can be recovered with software alone.
Q: What is the success rate for recovering data?
The success rate for software recovery is about 98%
Hardware recovery depends much more on the extent of the damage but averages about 56%.
Q: What is the turnaround time?
The average turnaround time is 24 hours on a software recovery, and eight to ten days for a hardware
recovery. Again this is depending on the size of the media. The larger the media the longer it will take.
Q: When the hard drive has water damage, why isn't the initial evaluation free?
The initial evaluation fees cover the cost of the clean room, Nitrogen chambers, platter cleaning, etc.
This is also a very time intensive process.
Q: How long will you hold onto my recovered data?
Q: Can you recover pictures from my digital camera?
HTI can recover data from flash drives, memory cards, USB memory sticks, and a wide variety
of media.
Q: How will I receive my recovered data?
Depending on the quantity of data to be recovered, it could be returned on a CD Rom, DVD, or an
external hard drive.
Q: Why don't you accept electronic work orders?
Q: Does HTI consult on more than just security?
HTI consults on everything form hardware and software to policies and procedures.
Q: What is a 501(c)(3)?
A 501(c)(3) is a status for a non-profit organization. HTI offers reduced rates for non-profit
organizations that provide proof.
Q: Is a wireless network an option for my business?
HTI can configure and secure wireless networks for home and office. Please note that some
business areas have restriction (i.e. Alaska does not allow wireless networks for law firms).
Q: How long does it take to conduct a general security assessment?
The goals of the security audit and the quantity of devices being assessed will determine the time
required. In-depth searching for logic bombs or malicious code takes much longer than an
automate scan. Call for an estimate, and the report will take two weeks from the completion of the
audit.
Q: How can I tell if someone is using my wireless connection?
HTI can place a sniffer on the public side of your wireless router, and monitor for unauthorized usage.
Q: Can you tell if my spouse is having an affair?
HTI has special monitoring tools that capture all user activity on a computer, and we carefully
analyze the results to prevent incorrect interpretation.
Q: What is evidence grade?
The original media is always preferred for legal cases, however this is not always realalistic. An
evidence grade image is an exact copy of the surface of the hard drive. Encase creates an image
file with built in checks that prevent the image file from being modified. This is admissible in court
in place of the original drive as evidence, and is a standard format that law enforcement work with.
Q: Do all investigations end up in court?
The majority of investigations do not go to court. Most business prefer to keep everything in house
without the publicity of legal proceedings.
Q: What is the chain of custody, and why do you use Fed Ex?
The chain of custody is basically keeping positive control on the evidence and documenting who
has had access and when. FedEx maintains a positive control on packages that are shipped, and
is an accepted method for transporting evidence.
Q: I cannot afford to interrupt business, but can you conduct your investigation after hours?
HTI routinely works outside of business hours to minimize any interruption in business.
Q: I am trying to keep the potential investigation quiet, will there be any
indications that an investigation is going on?
HTI works with each business and has several cover stories to minimize any suspicion and keep
investigations quiet while we preserve valuable electronic evidence.
Q: How can you tell if your computer has been hacked into?
Unless you keep track of when you log on and off of the computer and monitor the last access
times on files there might not be any indications of unauthorized access to your computer. A
careful forensic examination of the hard drive and active memory is the only way to determine.
Q: What access and support does HTI need for a standard investigation?
